Keyboard Shortcuts

Every default shortcut in the desktop app, how Mod maps to each platform, and how to change a binding.

On This Page

Every shortcut in the desktop app comes from one registry, so the tables below, Settings → Keyboard, and the Command Palette always agree. Mod is ⌘ on macOS and Ctrl on Windows and Linux; the tables print each chord the way the app does on that platform.

Find And Change A Shortcut#

Press Mod+Shift+P to open the Command Palette: it searches every command and shows the shortcut each one has right now, including the ones you changed.

To change one, open Settings → Keyboard and find the action:

  1. Click Change Shortcut next to it.
  2. Press the new combination. The row reads Press keys… (Esc to cancel) while it records.
  3. If another action already uses that combination, Alera asks whether to reassign it; confirm with Reassign.

Reset to Default puts a single action back, and Disable Shortcut removes its binding. A disabled action still runs from the Command Palette.

When A Terminal Has Focus#

Terminals want many of the same keys: on Windows and Linux, Close Tab is Ctrl+W, which also deletes a word in most shells. Settings → Keyboard → When a Terminal Is Focused decides who wins:

  • App First, the default, lets Alera capture its shortcuts before the shell sees them.
  • Terminal First hands the shell the few chords it has a use for, such as Close Tab, while a terminal has focus. The tables mark each of them; every other shortcut keeps working, since a shell has no meaning for chords like Ctrl+Tab or Mod+1.
